Just a minute ago we were happy and free as we welcomed Summer 2015! We've had to say hello to September and goodbye to August but the memory remains as I look back on my August Favourites in Grooming. Join me!
I am 100% sure my female readers know this so let me focus on the males. In 2015, a man who is interested in having positive human interactions and leaving an impression on those he comes across MUST be interested in grooming and engage in basic practices. The level of interest I may have in grooming may be more than the "average male" but I would like to know that my readers still have an interest in being well groomed in: skincare, hair, oral and general hygiene. It may help you to get that job or even a second date.
As Daymond John said "Good grooming is integral and impeccable style is a must. If you don't look the part no one will want to give you time or money". So, here are my August Favourites!
1. Irie Rock Skincare Line
This line is a Jamaican brand boasting the use of all natural products without parabens, colorants, alcohol and artificial fragrances. The products I use and enjoy are: The Tea Tree and Witch Hazel Deep Pore Cleanser, Tea Tree and Witch Hazel Refreshing Toner and the Replenishing Facial Moisturizer. Why use all these products? When a product highlights usage along with others from the same line, to truly test its power I use them altogether.
Did it work? Initially I was concerned because I was seeing no difference, as a matter of fact unlike all my other skincare products I didn't feel a tingle neither did my face feel "cool." However, over a couple of weeks I started to see more radiant and refreshed skin. Ofcourse it composes of witch hazel and teatree which are both VERY good for skincare. I have less breakouts and my skin has a generally more even tone. Ladies, my mother uses it as her skin without makeup is PERFECT. Also, the toner can be used as a make up remover and functions well as such.
-Clear. EVERYTHING was clear; not orange or blue with green microbeads and I was more convinced even with the "natural" smell that it was not as chemically based as the other skincare lines which I've encountered. This worked for me since I have sensitive skin.
- The moisturizer dissolves in no time. In the heat of this tropical climate, a moisturizer that reminds me of its presence 10 minutes later because my face feels clammy is annoying.
- It's affordable. I bought each component in the pharmacy (it's literally everywhere) for a little over $US 5.00-6.00 and it lasts for a good amount of time.

2. 80 Acres Olive Oil Lip Balm
As you can tell, I've been into these "all natural products". I'm not a fan of the excitement and big brands just something which is effective and if it isn't heavily based on chemicals, that's even better. Before this I used Burts Bees Lip Balm whcih was good. This product is quite special however, constituting of extra virgin olive oil from the McEvoy Ranch in California, infused with mint and calendula, the good old tea tree oil, beeswax and vitamin E.
One smear for the day and I'm good. It keeps me far away from chapped lips or stripped lips regardless of the conditions around me (heat, cold, hail etc). As stated, I love that it doesn't have a lingering smell and I also LOVE that it lasts for a very long time. My only drawback is that I have to dip my finger but you can't have it all right? I just ensure my hands are clean before applying it. To be honest I don't remember where I bought it but it retails between $US 7-10.00 online.

3. Aveeno Daily Moisturizer
First of all, if you didn't get the memo, you need to moisturize. It's almost as important as brushing your teeth (but people won't smell your face and be turned off). That aside, it is also highly recommended by dermatologists that your moisturizer contains SPF to protect your skin from UV rays. I haven't used this as much as the Irie Rock moisturizer because it has a thicker consistency and the heat doesn't allow it. I've had this for a long time and with faith every time I squeeze I receive!
For my university readers who have to walk across campus in the sun or those who walk to school or if you're exposed to the sun regularly this may be the best bet for your skin for various reasons:
- It doubles as a sunscreen with broad spectrum SPF 30. This will protect you throughout the day. Yes it is a little thick, so I suggest you apply it 15 minutes before going out into the sun.
- It contains Vitamins A, C & E. You MUST benefit from any product being used beyond mere "beauty". The vitamins infused in your skin will show itself as you age as they reduce brown spots, wrinkles and provides actually moisture!
- Generally speaking if you put this on before going to bed, your skin has a VERY supple look.
4. Candy Moisture Mousse
I was most interested in this product not only because of its name but because of the look, smell and all other special characteristics. Candy Moisture is a moisture-infused shea butter formula hair mousse for curly, wavy, kinky, coily and transitioning hair.
The inclusion of "candy" in the name is because of its appearance and smell. It actually has a sweet smell which reminds me of cookies or baked goods and the vibrant colours remind me of cotton candy. Based on what I've seen on instagram, men, women, children, senior citizens have used this product.
Has it worked? Yes it has. As a guy, I am so tired of using these products to "get waves" which smell like kerosene or leave my hair looking like a grease pan. Especially since I have a high fade, I needed something to use which would not only keep my hair healthy and nourished but looking good and effortless. Even at the end of a day, my hair looked good. As a matter of fact I ran into the creator of the product who said "I love ur hair what do you use?" ...."Your product" I replied and laughed. A healthy head of hair is because of Candy Moisture.
Points to Note:
-It costs close to US$14-16.00 in the pharmacy but a little goes a long way. I actually used mine almost everyday and it lasted from December 2014-August 2015. That is a mighty long time.
-It really smells great! Don't be fooled by the colour when you rub it together in your palms, it has a clear consistency.
- For all the hair lovers, it has coconut oil #thatisall!
