Spray-painting My Worn Toms: A Tutorial

Hey Everyone!

I hope you're all enjoying Summer 2016! Shoutout to my friends in Barbados, I heard that Crop Over 2016 was great and a SPECIAL SHOUTOUT to all the Jamaicans out there, Happy Belated Independence Day to you!

So, last week I faced a dilemma; my very favourite Red Toms were WORN! In every sense of the word: colour, material, the insides, the heel, and I wasn't ready to let go, or buy another pair. What was I gonna do? Throw them away or revive them to extend their 'life expectancy'? Well, if I threw them away there wouldn't be a blog post right now! I did some research and thought spray painting them (in silver) would be the best option. Here's what I did!

You'll need two things:

1. A FULL can of spray paint! (Ps. This blog post is late because my spray paint ran out lmao)

2. Newspaper

You may also use: tape (if you wish to preserve the brand tag and the brown border on the soles of the shoes)

STEP ONE:

Ensure your shoes are clean! I had to give my shoes a good wash because they were filthy. I wore them EVERYWHERE and with that they became more and more worn.

What did I use to wash them? Soap, Water, a Brush. PS. ENSURE you put them in the sun to dry! That smell is brutal.

STEP TWO

a. After they've been properly dried, use newspaper to stuff the shoe! This served two purposes for me: First, it prevented the inside and soles from becoming silver and second, it maintained the shape of the shoe (which will be very good when the shoe is sprayed and the canvas becomes stiff)

b. Lay the stuffed shoes on layers of newspaper (unless you'd like silver grass)

STEP THREE

SPRAY! SPRAY! SPRAY!

You will need about two-three layers if you're spraying red with silver since red is such a hard colour to mask. Also giving it numerous coats means you get the TRUE colour!

STEP FOUR

Leave to dry for about 24 hours!

STEP FIVE

WEAR!

GENERAL COMMENTS ON THE PROJECT

I wanted to mention to you guys that it kinda looks white sometimes and other times it looks silver and sometimes it looks grey, I really don't know but I love it!

Also, I noticed when I wore it to the beach I saw some of the silver paint on my legs. I have NO CLUE why but the next time I wear it I'll let you know if I have the same issue. It also faded because I was ankle deep in sand..so I don't suggest you wear it to hardcore events.

If you want a real cool metallic look, you could try this DIY with sneakers! (Hmm...-thinks about doing it in gold)

and that's it! Eaasy as ABC!
